Pack 244 spent the day at Shea Stadium to see the NY Mets beat the
Pittsburg Pirates on June 25th, 2000.
Game Summary:
MIKE HAMPTON "COMPLETES"
SWEEP WITH 5-HIT MASTERPIECE!
Shea Stadium just isn't a good place to be a Pirate.
Mike Hampton tossed a complete-game shutout and Melvin Mora added a
career-high four hits - including his fourth home run of the season -- as the New York
Mets crushed the Pirates 9-0 Sunday afternoon to sweep the three-game series and win their
seventh straight contest from the Bucs at Shea Stadium.
Touted as a true pitcher's duel, the game lived up to its billing in the early innings
with Hampton (W, 7-5, 2.49) battling Pittsburgh ace Kris Benson (L, 6-6, 3.15) for mound
supremacy. Through five innings, Benson scattered three New York hits and allowed just one
run on an RBI single by Jay Payton.
It would be Mike Hampton, though, who would dominate the flow of the game from then on.
Hampton established control of the game early, eventually giving up just five Pittsburgh
hits while putting the Pirate hitters down in order a staggering six times. Hampton added
nine strikeouts to his outstanding performance -- a season high -- against just two walks.
The Mets offense struggled early against the tough Benson, but came to life in the
sixth inning, when with the score 1-0, Robin Ventura drove in Melvin Mora with a
bases-loaded walk and Derek Bell scored on a Todd Zeile sacrifice fly.
